What to do if you have a flat battery

We hope you don’t end up in this predicament, but if you do, we are on hand to help, with our guide on what to do if you have a flat battery.

Tip: read up on this now so you’re calm, cool and collected if this happens to you…

Having a flat battery can feel like the end of the world and there can be a number of reasons it happens, from leaving your lights on to leaving the car stood for a little too long without driving it. However, it is not the end of the world and here’s what you can do to deal with it…

Make sure it is flat

This will sound obvious but make sure you have tried every avenue before you draw the conclusion that the battery is flat, you don’t want to be calling your other half, best friend or breakdown service if it is just a case of a stiff key in the ignition.

Jumpstart it

If the battery is positively flat, you can try jumpstarting the car. You will need jump start leads and a car that has a full battery, it is important to be super careful when doing this, make sure leads are in perfect condition, there is no metal touching the car and you are wearing sensible clothing that isn’t going to get in the way.

Call for help

If you have no joy, call a breakdown service for assistance. It is important that you stay calm during these situations and remember that safety comes first. Before doing any of this, you should get your car to a place of safety if it isn’t in one already. Avoid busy roads and standing near oncoming traffic as you do not want to add more things to worry about to the situation.
