Land Rover Through The Years

An iconic car that has not only stood the test of time but has evolved with it, the Land Rover has amassed a worthy following. Here, we take a look at why this legendary car is so popular among car enthusiasts…

Britain. 1948. The global economy is slowly recovering after a turbulent period. Suddenly, a national treasure is born that will shape the future of the motor industry. Granted a Royal Warrant in 1951 and then the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2001 it is clearly a much-loved motor that has stood the test of time.

The initial model was specifically designed for off-road driving, employing a four-wheel drive system and a shape built around practicality and an ability to take a hammering. For the most part, that is a design which they have maintained throughout the years.

1970 saw the birth of Land Rover’s most successful model, the Range Rover. It was launched to the public as “A Car For All Reasons,” and in this they succeeded. Land Rover had now built a vehicle that was much better in both areas that anything currently available, both on and off-road.

In 1983, the Land Rover 90 burst onto the public scene. It would later be renamed and forever known as the Defender, captivating an audience who lapped up its ability to tackle the most difficult of terrain.

As it began to form an identity, Land Rover aimed to expand their fanbase. Then came the Discovery range. This model is often cited as being highly influential, becoming one of the first to profess to be a fully off-road capable family car.

Despite critical acclaim, Land Rover refuses to take their foot off the pedal. Current ranges of older models continue to be a huge success, with Range Rover models now also having a sporty and modern design (and many-a-celebrity have adopted at least one Land Rover as their vehicle of choice)

The future continues to look bright for Land Rover, with the reimagined Land Rover Defender set to hit our roads alongside a modern hybrid that we just can’t wait to sink our teeth into.
